Alcon PanOptix vs Vivity: Trifocal vs EDOF

Both Alcon lenses sit in the premium IOL segment. PanOptix typically costs ₹75,000 – ₹95,000 per eye and Vivity costs ₹70,000 – ₹85,000 per eye at leading eye hospitals in India. Pricing varies by city, surgeon experience, and whether you opt for femto-assisted implantation. Always ask for the all-inclusive package price (surgeon fee + OT + lens + post-op follow-ups).

Vivity is designed using X-WAVE technology that stretches light instead of splitting it, so halos are very rare compared to trifocals. Most patients report no haloes at all, though a small percentage notice very mild light trails for the first few weeks. PanOptix, being a diffractive trifocal, does produce visible halos and starbursts — mild in most, moderate in a few — which typically fade over 3–6 months.

PanOptix is clearly better for near vision. It delivers roughly 20/20 vision at 40 cm (phone and book distance) without glasses. Vivity, being an Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lens, gives functional vision at 55–60 cm (laptop distance) but most Vivity patients still need low-power reading glasses for fine print, prolonged reading, or low-light menus.

Vivity is the safer choice for frequent night drivers, taxi drivers, and anyone whose job involves driving after dark. Its minimal halo profile preserves contrast sensitivity in low light. PanOptix can produce halos around headlights and streetlights that some patients find distracting for the first few months.

Standard health insurance policies in India only cover the cost of monofocal IOLs (₹12,000 – ₹25,000). Premium lenses like PanOptix and Vivity are treated as patient upgrades — you pay the difference out of pocket. A few corporate and OPD-rider policies (Niva Bupa ReAssure, Care Supreme) now partially cover premium IOL upgrades; always confirm with your insurer before surgery.

Vivity adaptation is almost immediate — most patients see well within 24–48 hours. PanOptix neuroadaptation takes 4–12 weeks as the brain learns to interpret the three focal points; some patients need up to 6 months for halos to fully fade. This is why Vivity is often recommended for older patients (70+) who may adapt more slowly to diffractive optics.
