Detailed comparison

Femto-LASIK and Contoura Vision are both 'premium LASIK' upgrades, but they improve different parts of the procedure. Femto-LASIK upgrades the flap — replacing the mechanical microkeratome blade with a femtosecond laser for micron-precision, safer flap creation. Contoura Vision upgrades the ablation — using 22,000-point corneal topography to personalise the laser pattern beyond your eyeglass prescription. You can even combine both: Femto flap + Contoura ablation, which many top centres offer as their flagship package.

Our verdict

If you can only pick one upgrade, choose Contoura Vision — better visual quality impacts your daily life more than a bladeless flap. But the ideal choice is both: Femto-LASIK + Contoura ablation together, which most premium centres offer for ₹1.0–1.4L per eye. If budget is tight, Femto-LASIK gives you the flap-safety edge; Contoura gives you the vision-quality edge.

Femto-LASIK upgrades the entrance; Contoura upgrades the result. In an ideal world, every patient gets both — a bladeless Femto flap for safety and a Contoura-guided ablation for the best possible vision. When a patient's budget only allows one, I first look at their topography. If the cornea map shows even mild irregularity, Contoura's personalised ablation will make a meaningful difference to their night vision and sharpness. If the cornea map is pristine but the patient is anxious about the blade, Femto's flap safety is the right upgrade. The best advice I can give: don't think of them as competitors — think of them as a package deal that together delivers the safest and sharpest LASIK available today.

  • I recommend Contoura Vision as the priority upgrade when corneal topography shows even mild irregularity, the patient drives at night, or achieving 'Super 6/5' vision is a personal goal.
  • I recommend Femto-LASIK as the priority upgrade when a patient has thinner corneas (femto can create a thinner, more precise flap safely), is anxious about the mechanical blade, or has any anatomical risk factor for blade complications.
  • The common mistake patients make is thinking they must choose one or the other. Both can and should be combined for the best outcome — ask your centre for the 'Femto + Contoura' combined package.

Patients who receive the combined Femto+Contoura procedure in our practice achieve 6/5 or better in 72% of eyes and report the lowest rates of night-vision complaints — the synergy of safe access plus personalised correction is real.
